28 Sep Solar Energy and Solar Panels Q&A
At Energy Saving Pros, serving Northern California, we get asked a lot of questions about solar energy and solar panels. Some questions concern the size of the system needed, some have to do with installation, but most revolve around budgetary considerations. Here is a sampling of common questions we are asked.
How much do I need?
Most people want to know how many solar panels will be needed to meet their energy goals. But the answer is not as simple as it might seem. Besides calculating the amount of energy each panel can produce, it depends on several factors that are unique for each home. If you plan on a rooftop installation, you need to consider how much appropriate roof space you have, the angle of the roof and its orientation to the sun. With a ground installation, HOA restrictions need to be considered along with an appropriate place to mount them. Can I install them myself?
You might have the skills needed to mount a solar panel on the roof of your RV, but installing a home system is definitely NOT a do-it-yourself project. Your solar system will be generating its own electricity and will be connected to the existing electric utility grid. The system must be officially approved, meet standards determined by the National Electric Code® (NEC), and have signed permits before it can be commissioned. Unless you are licensed to work with this equipment, you will need to use a certified, bonded and insured installer to do the work.
What is the average ROI?
Your return on investment depends on the size of your system, how often it is producing energy and how much of a rebate your present energy supplier offers you. Solar system prices have fallen over the past few years, efficiency has increased, and utility prices have risen. This means that your savings will add up more quickly than in the past. You will pay less per month to your utility company as you generate your own energy. A typical 6kW system can pay for itself in as little as 4-5 years. With a 30 year life expectancy, you will realize a huge savings on your utility costs.
